\\\ FOR THE BRAIN TUMOUR CHARITY////

The Cimitero EP was originally released on underground Dubstep imprint, Indigo Movement, in April 2019. The label has now sadly folded, but the label boss, Duckem, has kindly allowed us to share the EP in order to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity.

Soul Bass Project’s relationship with Indigo Movement started sometime before. After being blown away by the quality of the label’s releases, Soul Bass Project started sharing some dubs with Duckem. He was impressed and eventually this led to him including London Road on the VAV2 compilation. This was the first Soul Bass Project release, and this track has been included as a bonus track.

Duckem later challenged Soul Bass Project to write an EP specifically for the label, which resulted in the Cimitero EP. The word 'cimitero' means graveyard in Italian, which is quite apt for this dark, brooding collection of tracks. The EP was strangely released the month before Matt, of Soul Bass Project, was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

The track Cimitero is almost a gothic take on the 140 sound. Inspired by a trip to the Isola di San Michele (Isle of the Dead) in Venice, and from reading the Michael Dibdin novel, Dead Lagoon. It utilises the dark drones of church bells, with washes of melodic Rhodes piano and church organ, along with deep bass and insistent percussion, to drive home its eerie atmosphere.

Evacuate is a homage to Hans Zimmer’s soundtrack from the Christopher Nolan film Dunkirk. Shepard tones are employed to create a tense atmosphere, which is backed by rhythms inspired by Chicago Footwork, in particular the DJ Rashad album Double Cup. This is mixed with sparse deep bass tones, made for the sound system.

The third track, Creeping Tide, is a moving piece, reflecting upon the disturbing - yet stealthy - rise of fascism in the 21st century. The piece makes use of haunting piano lines and string arrangements, blended with sparse dubbed out rhythms and deep wobbling bass. A disconcerting and highly prescient selected spoken word sample from 1995 makes the message of the piece 100% clear to the listener. This piece received praise from US dubstep legend Joe Nice, who described it as “incredible”. High praise indeed!

Please help support the fight against brain tumours by buying the release.
